February 11, 2009
Dear APANO Members and Friends –
Happy Year of the Ox. The newly elected APANO Board meets for the first time Tuesday, Feb 17, 630-830 PM at the Asian Reporter Foundation on N Killingsworth. We are still preparing a report on the Statewide Retreat Jan 23-24, but suffice to say it was an amazing gathering of 64 API from across Oregon. A more business/news email will follow this events announcement.
We are moving forward with 2 key initiatives – APANO’s Many Rivers Project which will be conducting 12 API listening circles, and establishing an APANO Policy Working Group whose goals include an API Legislative Day possibly in May 2009.
Below are several events that are of special interest to APANO:
- APANO will have a table with DisOrient Film Festival in Eugene at this weekends Asian Celebration. We are still seeking volunteers for Feb 14-15 to staff the table.
- Procession for Respect and Dignity Feb 18 4-6pm in St Helens. If you’re planning to go, let us know so we can walk together.
- Asian American Journalists Association Oregon Chapter is hosting a Capital Discussion and Tour Sat Feb 28 10am-Noon. This is an opportunity to become more familiar with Salem, the Legislative Process, and APANO visibility!
- API Leadership Conference Feb 28 in Seattle WA day-long. A comprehensive opportunity to develop your skills with other API from the Pacific Northwest.
Let us know if you’re interested in these, we can help carpool, may be able to provide small scholarships, and would love to connect folks.
Sincerely,
Rev. Joseph Santos-Lyons
ps – Please join APANO as a dues-paying member at www.apano.org starting at $5/year. Your contribution and membership are critical to API voice in Oregon.

Columbia County is ground zero in Oregon’s struggle against anti-immigrant attempts to scapegoat immigrants during these tough economic times. We defeated Ballot Measure 191 (the big racist signs initiative) but were unable to stop Measure 190 (a cut and paste from Arizona that mandates homeland security’s E-Verify database along with a $10,000 fine).
On January 30th, we won an injunction that has temporarily stopped Measure 190 from taking effect, but the battle is not over. That is why we need to stand together as rural and urban, Latino and allies to demand respect and dignity for all people.
