Education Equity

Asians and Pacific Islanders, particularly immigrants and refugees, continue to face serious barriers to academic success in Oregon’s schools. Specific issues impacting our diverse communities include English language learners, parent engagement, cultural competency, workforce diversity, and racial harassment.

APANO values good, fair and accessible education for all children. API community leaders have been working for years with local schools and community organizations to embolden conversations around improving access to quality education for our children.

In 2011, our Strategic Planning process prioritized the following education equity objectives:

  1. Secure education equity for English Language Learners (ELL) by working with key partners in communities of color to address shared concerns in pursuit of improved educational achievements among priority API communities and families.
  2. Advance statewide leadership for appropriate funding and policy environment that supports ELL programs in partnership with Oregon Student Association, CAUSA, Bus Project, Salem-Keizer Coalition for Equality, Stand for Children, and the Center for Intercultural Organizing.

Our goal is improving and maintaining key ELL programs and funding in Portland Public Schools, and establishing school-based APANO advocacy groups. We also want to play a key role in advancing Tuition Equity statewide legislation.
