We are honored to have founding Executive Director of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), activist and writer, Deepa Iyer. Deepa steered the direction of SAALT, the only progressive national organization addressing issues facing South Asians, for nearly a decade. Under Deepa’s leadership, SAALT launched the first national network of South Asian organizations, became a leading voice on post 9/11, civil rights and immigration issues in the media, and is a go-to resource for policymakers in Washington D,C. on the South Asian community. Deepa also chaired the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) for three years and helped to develop the infrastructure and visibility of national AAPI organizations in the United States.
The banquet will also feature a special performance from Unit Souzu. Portland’s newest professional taiko company, Unit Souzou (pronounced “sohzoh”), is at the forefront of a growing artistic movement in the taiko world. Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe, co-directors of Unit Souzou are relentless innovators known for their groundbreaking fusion of taiko and Japanese folk dance.
