Manumalo “Malo” Ala’ilima, a Samoan American butch lesbian and” fa’atane”, Samoan for “in the manner of a man,” has extensive experience in community organizing and nonprofit leadership and has been in Portland for five years. Malo co-founded and is the co-chair for UTOPIA PDX (United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance Portland), which provides sacred spaces for QTPIs – Queer and Transgender Pacific Islanders – through community organizing, political engagement, and cultural stewardship. They serve as Vice President for the Samoan Pacific Development Corporation (SPDC), is an official voting member for the Pacific Islander Coalition – a culturally specific advisory board for the Multnomah County Health Department, and a former board member of UTOPIA Seattle and Q Center. They are the Board President for Pride Northwest, the organization responsible for coordinating the Portland Pride festival and parade for the past 25 years. When she’s not busy trying to save the world, karaoke is a welcome diversion!
