Manumalo “Malo” Ala’ilima, a Samoan American butch lesbian and” fa’atane”, Samoan for “in the manner of a man,” has extensive experience in community organizing and nonprofit leadership and has been in Portland for five years. Malo co-founded and is the co-chair for UTOPIA PDX (United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance Portland), which provides sacred spaces for QTPIs – Queer and Transgender Pacific Islanders – through community organizing, political engagement, and cultural stewardship. They serve as Vice President for the Samoan Pacific Development Corporation (SPDC), is an official voting member for the Pacific Islander Coalition – a culturally specific advisory board for the Multnomah County Health Department, and a former board member of UTOPIA Seattle and Q Center. They are the Board President for Pride Northwest, the organization responsible for coordinating the Portland Pride festival and parade for the past 25 years.
